Tim King to Headline LAPCS Annual Conference

The Louisiana Association of Public Charter Schools (LAPCS) Executive Director Caroline Roemer Shirley today announced keynote speaker Tim King will be headlining the statewide organization’s conference this year, 7th Inning Stretch: Charters. Choice. Change.

The conference will be held on Tuesday, October 21, Crowne Plaza Baton Rouge, 4728 Constitution Avenue.  A welcome reception will be held  Monday, October 20, from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m, Juban’s, 3739 Perkins Road.

“Our annual conference is the only real opportunity for board members, school leaders, educators, parents, legislators and policy makers to come together and discuss what’s going on in the charter school movement and education reform as a whole,” said Ms. Roemer Shirley. “With so much going on right now with education in our state, I think it’s important for folks with a stake in public education in Louisiana to come together to hear the truth about education reform from someone with a powerful track record of success, such as Tim King.”

Tim King is the President and CEO of Urban Prep Academies, a nonprofit organization that oversees a charter network in Chicago with an unparalleled success rate: 100 percent of Urban Prep Graduates – all African-American males predominantly from low-income families – have been admitted to four-year colleges and universities.

The remarkable performance of Urban Prep students earned Mr. King numerous awards and recognitions, including People Magazine’s “Hero of the Year”, ABC World News “Person of the Week”, Ebony Magazine’s “Power 100” list, BET’s “Shine A Light Award,” as well as features on Good Morning America and the Oprah Winfrey Show.

“As charter schools continue to grow throughout the state, it’s important that we make sure the focus of the movement continues to be high quality education options for our children,” said Ms. Roemer Shirley. “Part of that is hearing from people like Tim King who have proven beyond a doubt that, when given the right educational environment, every child can succeed. There are always lessons to be learned from success, and I’m very much looking forward to what Mr. King has to say.”
