Schools hold student and staff safety paramount in the fight against COVID-19. Louisiana data released by the Louisiana Department of Public Health shows some of the highest infection rates, hospitalizations, and deaths since January 2021.
In response to and care for their school communities, nearly half of NOLA charter public schools band together to announce their decision that they will require staff to be vaccinated and provide proof of completed vaccination. Individual school rollout plans vary, but each school will communicate the process for vaccination requirements to its staff.
Schools will work with staff eligible for vaccination exemptions under the law. Schools will require exempt staff to test weekly.
By requiring adults on campus to vaccinate, we can protect our students and families. It is critical to have kids in schools and teachers in classrooms to support students academically and emotionally from learning lost amid the pandemic.
The schools requiring teachers to vaccinate represent about 50% of public school students in New Orleans. These school leaders are encouraging all eligible people in the community to vaccinate to protect themselves and our students.
