Louisiana Association of Public Charter Schools Statement on the Closing of New Orleans Alternative

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                                      October 11, 2018

Response to Mid-Year Closing of Alternative Charter School

NEW ORLEANS — Today Crescent Leadership Academy (CLA), an alternative middle and high school announced it will close at the end of the month. It is an alternative charter school that accepts students who’ve been expelled from other city schools. The Louisiana Association of Public Charter Schools released the following statement from Executive Director, Caroline Roemer.

“We are deeply disappointed that Crescent Leadership Academy made the abrupt decision to shut down operations in the middle of a school year. This impacts the lives of students who deserve better.

It is unacceptable to turn your back so abruptly on students whose futures depended on these school leaders. Even so, because CLA has consistently underperformed and struggled with leadership and finances, we believe there are better options for our students.

Despite the closure, we are confident that Superintendent Henderson Lewis is diligently working through Enroll NOLA to bring better education options for all the students.

While the majority of the students chose to attend CLA, we are confident that charter schools like The NET, ReNEW Accelerated, and JCFA offer students better alternative learning settings for those students nearing the end of their expulsion term.

We look forward to working with the Orleans Parish School Board and Supt. Lewis to identify alternative school options for middle school students.”
