Why did you choose to serve on your school’s board? I believe in the mission of the school and was willing to serve in any capacity needed. I had been on two local school boards in the past and knew the challenges that schools faced. As a parent, I have a unique opportunity to see the school from the students and teachers eyes.
How did you become involved with your school? We were blessed to be able to foster and adopt 2 children through the State of Louisiana. My oldest child, Freddy, came to our house at the age of 6 and we adopted him last summer, at the age of 7. He was attending a traditional public school in Jefferson Parish and was bullied already in first grade. He was not receiving the education he deserved. We learned of Young Audiences Charter School (YACS) through a parent whose child also had ADHD. We enrolled Freddy into YACS this past year and his social and academic skills soared. He ended the year with a 3.89 GPA.
Our youngest child, Camryn, will be attending YACS this coming school year as a kindergartner. We began fostering Camryn at 10 months old and adopted him at the age of 2.
What leadership roles have you had while serving on the board? As a relatively new school, there are exciting opportunities in front of us. I will keep focus on the facilities and the physical updates needed. Also, the whole board will continue working on raising the awareness of the school in Jefferson Parish and Gretna. YACS makes a difference in the lives of nearly 600 students and garnering wide-spread support of the school is invaluable.
How can people help your school if they are interested? First and foremost, hold YACS and all school children in your thoughts, meditations and/or prayers. Our children are our future. If we keep all children in the forfronts of our minds, we will put them first.
Secondly, keep YACS and all teachers, staff and board members in your thoughts, meditations and/or prayers. They are all working to teach our children to the best of their abilities. Their work is often overlooked.
Lastly, we have many classroom and infrastructure needs as a school going into its fourth year of existence on an old campus.
