Board Member Focus: Les Alexander III, Benjamin Franklin High School

Why did you choose to serve on your school’s board? Benjamin Franklin High School is the top performing high school in Louisiana and is nationally recognized for the academic achievements of its students and faculty. Our student body is one of the most diverse in the area and consistently produces a large number of National Merit finalists. Orleans parish students deserve access to high quality educational opportunities, and by volunteering as a board member, I felt it was one of the best ways I could give back to the community.

How did you become involved with your school? When my daughter was a freshman at Ben Franklin, a former board member asked me to serve as a member of the Finance Committee. After working on that committee for several months I was asked if I would be interested in becoming a board member. I am grateful to him for giving me this opportunity to serve the school and its community.

What leadership roles have you held while serving on the board? I have served as a member of the Finance Committee, a member of the Strategic Planning Committee, chairman of the Audit Committee, and was recently elected board President.

How can people help your school if they are interested? In addition to serving on the board or its committees, parents can volunteer with the Parents Association, alumni can join the Alumni Association, and students are encouraged to take active leadership positions as a part of our student council. Also, we are always in need of financial support to supplement the funds we receive from the state to operate the school. For those interested in giving to the school, I would suggest contacting Christy Read, our Director of Development.
