Why did you choose to serve on your school’s board? As a child growing up, my mother always stressed the importance of education. A proper education enriches, uplifts, and allows a child’s fertile mind to blossom. Although there are many schools in the city, Homer A. Plessy Community School is unique in its approach to a Reggio-inspired, arts integrated curriculum. By incorporating art into the framework of learning, children stay actively engaged in their education, which provides a rewarding experience for both children and teachers alike. In a city that has such a rich artistic and cultural history, it is a pleasure to serve on the Board of Directors of a school that is able to integrate much of the artistic culture into the education of its pupils.
How did you become involved with your school? I met the Governance Initiatives Director of the Louisiana Association of Public Charter Schools at an event hosted by the Louisiana Bar Association, where she informed me of the need for Board Members at several charter schools throughout the city. Upon completion of the application process, I was paired with several schools that were looking to recruit additional Board Members. When I took a tour of the Homer A. Plessy Community School, spoke with the Board President, and met the Board and School Principal, I knew this particular school was the right fit.
What leadership roles have you had while serving on the board? I am currently serving as Secretary.
How can people help your school if they are interested? Spread the word! We are always looking to enlarge the Homer A. Plessy Community School family. We are also quite receptive to monetary donations whenever possible.
