Why did you choose to serve on your school’s board? KIPP (and other schools) have proved what is possible — both in education and for New Orleans in general. It’s also a proof point for national education reform. If you have never toured a KIPP school, you should — it’s inspiring in the literal sense of the word.
How did you become involved with your school? Jodi Aamodt, a former Young Leadership Council President and, more recently,a KIPP Board chair, consistently invited me to tour and I consistently ducked her invitation. When I finally accepted, I regretted having waited because the proof point was so compelling.
What leadership roles have you held while serving on the board? I have served as development chairman and board chairman. I am currently the governance/nominations chair. I also conceived and helped prototype an “Employers Council” to match students and alumni who best integrate KIPP virtues and behaviors with local employers.
How can people help your school if they are interested? Send a check! Stay alert to bills in the legislature that create any risk to the amazing momentum we have. We’re moving toward offering one of the best school systems in America by 2020. Also, consider joining a charter school board — any charter school! KIPP is by no means the only amazing one and good boards matter.
