Board Member Focus: Gary L. Kreigh, ARISE Schools

Why did you choose to serve on your school’s board? The ARISE Schools began its focus as a transformational school to serve the children & community of the Upper 9th Ward of New Orleans, following the devastating aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Diversity in skills, experience & leadership as well as in the individuals leading the effort was a critical factor in ensuring that an academic and social transformation would be successful. Adding a vision and mission focused on the educational well-being and excellence for each child matched what I was looking for in school leadership.

How did you become involved with your school? My employer was dedicated to the revitalization of communities and neighborhoods within New Orleans and supported my interest in getting involved in education. From there, I had an opportunity to work through New Schools for New Orleans who not only introduced me to ARISE, but provided a comprehensive orientation and training program that helped me utilize my skills & experience effectively by lessening the learning curve.

What leadership roles have you had while serving on the board? I began my board experience as Treasurer and Chair of the Finance Committee and am currently Vice President & Chair of the Development Committee. I have also served as a member of the Governance Committee.

How can people help your school if they are interested? We are always interested in individuals who have skills, experience or an interest in bettering the lives of children in the Upper 9th Ward and New Orleans East. I would encourage individuals to schedule a tour of our facilities and look into volunteering in finance, development, academics, and various festivals and contests we hold for our scholars and the community. We are excited that our first 8th grade class will be graduating this spring. We are sponsoring a well-deserved class trip to Washington, D.C. for the children. We welcome anyone who is interested in helping make this dream come true for our scholars.
