Board Member Focus: Erika May, Cypress Charter School Association

Why did you choose to serve on your school’s board? I chose to serve on my School Board because of the values it embodies. We are a hardworking engaged group of individuals that strive for excellence in all we do in our service to the students and staff at Cypress Academy. We don’t make decisions lightly and I respect each of my colleagues for the tenacity put forth in the assurance of Cypress Academy’s success. Furthermore, I’ve been in the field of education since 1998 and have served on countless committees and served as committee chair for a host of events and initiatives, but nothing tops serving our future generation of scholars and the community in this capacity. I believe, as Dr. Lorraine Monroe once said, “I was sent to do this work at this particular time, and there is nothing else I would rather be doing right now!”

How did you become involved with your school? I was approached by the Head of School and the Director of Curriculum and Instruction about this great opportunity. They both can tell you that one of the first things I said was, “If you’re looking for a signature signer then I’m not the one for the job, but if you’re looking for someone who is serious about the education of our future generation and who will be engaged from beginning to end, then I’m in.” They brought my information back to the Board, they voted, and the rest is history.

What leadership roles have you had while serving on the board? I am fairly new to our Board and currently serve on the Human Resources Committee. Also, during board discussions, I’ve provided additional insight into charter schools due to my experience working in other schools.

How can people help your school if they are interested? Cypress welcomes volunteers and interested people are welcome to get in touch with the Head of School – or call the school for more information.
