Why did you choose to serve? I passionately believe in the KIPP mission. Getting school age kids from low socio-economic backgrounds to start preparing for a college education is not an easy task. It requires a complete restructuring of the educational process and I proudly support our teachers and educators who accomplish this task every day.
How did you become involved with your school? When we first moved to New Orleans, I was asked to visit KIPP Believe Primary for a school site visit. I was moved by what I saw going on in the classrooms. I wanted to be a part of such an amazing educational endeavor.
What leadership roles have you held while serving on the board? I am currently the secretary of the board. I serve on the Governance, Nominations and GALA committees. In addition, I have taken a special interest in the KIPP To and Through college program. My husband and I have hosted the KIPP graduates at our home after their first semesters in college to celebrate their accomplishments. Most students are the first in their families to go to college. Their shared experiences allow them to go back to college rejuvenated and ready for the challenges ahead.
How can people help your school if they are interested? The teachers at KIPP make the extraordinary seem mundane. The experiences that they create for the students require a lot of resources. Donating to KIPP and allowing the educators to appropriate the resources is probably best. Also, join KIPP for a school visit or agree to take a high school student as an intern.
