Why did you choose to serve on your school’s board? In 2008 I was asked by Dr. Vallas to form a Type 2 public military charter school. We obtained the charter and four years ago established the school.
Our first graduating class was in April of 2015 when we graduated 76 cadets. This school year we hope to enroll nearly 700 cadets. I firmly believe that Marine Corps pride and character building play a vital role in creating a positive learning environment. Our school mission is to provide every cadet with the opportunity to be a success in life. We are truly representative of our community with an integrated student body inclusive of multiple races, genders and socioeconomic classes represented in our five local parishes. NOMMA is located in two totally renovated buildings inside Federal City and is one of the finest facilities in the region. We get tremendous support from the Marine Corps community. NOMMA is a wonderful institution and urban high school model. I am very proud to be a part of this board.
How did you become involved with your school? I became involved due to the requests of Dr. Vallas and Major General David Mize USMC ret.
What leadership roles have you held while serving on the board? I have been the President since the board formed. I filed the charter and formed the initial board. I have worked closely with BESE and the Department of the Navy in this team effort.
How can people help your school if they are interested? In addition to serving on the board or its committees, parents can volunteer with the Parents Association, alumni can join the Alumni Association, and students are encouraged to take active leadership positions as a part of our student council. Also, we are always in need of financial support to supplement the funds we receive from the state to operate the school.
