Why did you choose to serve on your school’s board? As a Greater New Orleans native and former educator, I am passionate about student achievement and student access to meaningful, purposeful opportunities; for this reason, I choose to serve on the board of JCFA because it provides an innovative, alternative educational pathway for our students to attain success and access in a safe and nurturing environment. Additionally, the teaching model is student-centered and student-focused, relying on both passionate teachers and caring tutors to provide whole class and one-on-one instruction to meet the individual academic needs of our students. Finally, the leadership and staff at JCFA are consistently working to ensure that each student’s experience is personal and is one that magnifies student strengths and student success.
How did you become involved with your school? My involvement at JCFA started as a tutor for a summer mathematics course at JCFA-West. During this summer experience, I had the opportunity to interact and converse with some of the most passionate, driven students and animated, amiable instructors. I recall days when I would speak with JCFA students while tutoring and would be taken back by the level of maturity, intellect and care. In those moments with students, I had hoped that after my summer tutoring experience, I could continue to give back to their success and to their futures. A few months post summer tutoring, I was asked to serve on the JCFA Board. Of course I could not turn down the opportunity.
What leadership roles have you had while serving on the board? While on the JCFA Board, I have been able to serve in a few capacities to which I am still acclimating, since I am a fairly new board member. During JCFA’s day of service, I helped connect JCFA to local community organizations to expand the number of service areas for JCFA students. In addition, I am a recent member of JCFA’s Policy and Student Success board committees, which have been quite informative spaces for me to learn more about our students and our mission and to engage with JCFA Board members.
