The Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) Partnership has awarded a five-year $1,000,000 grant to
Belle Chasse Academy. These funds will enable Belle Chasse Academy to improve learning through standards-based afterschool tutoring program. This compelling and rigorous approach to afterschool tutoring seeks to provide students with additional time and support for their learning as soon as they experience difficulty.
Belle Chasse Academy, a public charter school housed on the Naval Air Station/Joint Reserve Base in Belle Chasse, LA, has an educational mission to serve the unique emotional and educational needs of military dependent students no matter their previous education or experiences.
“These military-connected students represent over 85% of our student population, and it is our goal to offer the most comprehensive child-specific tutoring, based on Professional Learning Communities, to not only raise the level of academic excellence in our school, but to send our students to their next duty stations better prepared for success.We will implement effective research-based protocols to ensure that robust data cycles are in place to track student progress and initiate appropriate instructional interventions,” stated April Vincent, DoDEAProject Director.
“We look forward to using this funding to better equip our teachers through professional development and classroom support to guarantee student success through targeted academic assistance and student self-monitoring,” stated Superintendent Jane Dye. “We are so proud to have earned this opportunity and look forward to utilizing it to best serve our student body.”
According to Lauran Hihar, Academic Coach chosen to implement grant initiatives, “The DoDEA grant is an opportunity for our teachers to extend learning beyond the school day by targeting skills that individual students need to develop. Our teachers will meet in small professional learning communities to plan for student success. I’m excited to lead these professional development initiatives and guide our tutors in the implementation of data collection and analysis to bolster student achievement.”
This is the first grant that Belle Chasse Academy has been awarded from the Department of Defense Education Activity Partnership.
