Advocacy: A Strong Voice for your School

The LAPCS is committed to advocating for the specific needs of Louisiana’s charter schools. Charter schools are entities created through the state legislature and other public officials, whose actions can affect the ability of charter schools to succeed -- and even their very existence. The LAPCS provides information to legislators, district officials, and policymakers about issues that are important to charter schools.

Communications & Best Practice Sharing

The LAPCS will keep you updated and ask for your input on the state and federal legislative actions that affect the health and existence of Louisiana’s charter schools. We broker the vast knowledge and experience of Louisiana’s public charter schools and other charter organizations around the country to provide members with learning opportunities, a statewide annual conference and forums for engagement with a variety of charter leaders. In addition, the LAPCS will develop and engage parents, students, and other key stakeholders in a network of grassroots support for the charter movement. Consistent communication and regularly scheduled events are a key component of LAPCS' services to member schools and its advocacy network.

Financing & Fundraising

As a member start-up school, you are eligible to apply for the Walton Family Foundation's Start-Up Grant Program, which allocates grants of $250,000 each to schools in their start-up phase. Additionally, members receive regular updates about new funding opportunities.

Participation in Top Shelf

The Top Shelf enhances board capacity through recruitment and the delivery of learning opportunities.  As a member of the LAPCS, Partner Schools receive the following services through The Top Shelf:

  • Access to a repository of charter school board candidates interested committee or board service
  • Connection to a statewide network of board members to serve as thought partners
  • Invitations to relevant workshops and learning sessions build the knowledge base of board members

Group Purchasing Opportunities

The LAPCS is currently negotiating with vendors around the country in order to provide member schools with access to group purchasing contracts with product and service vendors. As a member school, you will have access to the Staples Statewide Charter School Buying program, where you can expect to receive 15-85% off list prices on your core products.

Participation in LAPCS Members Advisory Council (MAC)

The LAPCS Members Advisory Council (MAC) provides active input into the programs, services, and legislative agenda of the LAPCS. Council members will be asked for advice and counsel on important issues, as well as help in reaching out to charter schools, policymakers, and other community leaders statewide. The MAC is a key organizational component in identifying issues, setting priorities, and gathering data for the betterment of charter schools.
